Obituary of John P. Herdwig, Jr.

John P. Herdwig, Jr., 69, of East Petersburg, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at the Bob Fryer and Family Inpatient Center of Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy. Born in Williamsport, he was the son of the late John P. Herwig, Sr., and the late Martha L. Fry Herdwig. He was the husband of Jena L. Becker Herdwig. They would have been married for 22 years on October 7.

John was employed by various contractors as a concrete finisher for 36 years until retiring from Stief Concrete in 2015. His life’s moto, “Work hard, play hard,” was evident in his passion for the sport of large and small mouth bass fishing. Not only did he spend countless hours by the water, but he also organized his vast collection of fishing equipment and lures, watched fishing programs on TV, and read fishing magazines. He also was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan and intently watched NHRA drag racing.

John hosted friends and family to Sci-Fi Saturday nights in their home when they would watch black and white science fiction movies together. He also enjoyed listening to the music of his favorite artists, the Rolling Stones, Who, Mark Knofler, and ZZ Top.

He enjoyed their vacations to Raystown Lake every spring and fall. John had a great sense of humor and would deliberately find something to laugh about every day, even if it was laughing at their own “Herdwig-ese” vocabulary.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Ross W. Herdwig of Lancaster, two stepsons, Anthony N. “Tony” Doster (husband of the late Theresa) of Manheim, and Jacob E. Doster (husband of Michelle) of Mountville; three “snerks”, Allison, Lucas, and Brooklyn Doster; and a nephew, Matthew B. Roschel (husband of Loretta) of Shippensburg. He was also preceded in death by two siblings, James R. Herdwig and Susan Roschel Kipp.
