Obituary of Charles A. Brommer, Sr.

Charles A. Brommer, Sr, 66, passed away on Thursday morning January 11, 2024 at Southeastern Veterans’ Center in Spring City following an 8 year struggle with Frontotemporal Dementia. Born and raised in Columbia, he was the son of Fannie Miller Brommer of Columbia and the late Charles S. Brommer, Jr.

After graduating from Hempfield High School in 1975, Charlie served his country for 6 years in the United States Air Force earning the rank of Staff Sargent. He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from Southern Illinois University. He was employed as a manufacturing engineer by Electron Energy Corporation and Harley Davidson before starting his own manufacturing business. Later he became a self-employed engineering consultant and spent 10 years working in south Texas and Mexico. Charlie was also the proud founder of The Beach Service – a beach chair and umbrella rental company which he owned and operated for nearly 20 years.

When he relocated to south Texas, he became very involved in the South Padre Island community. In addition to being active in the local church, he was involved in municipal government and served on the Beach and Dunes Committee of the island. His efforts helped to replenish dunes for the protection of the beach and island properties. Charlie was known by nearly everyone on South Padre Island and was the “go to guy.”  He did not hesitate to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it. He was truly a father figure to countless people.

In addition to his mother, Charlie is survived by three children, Shannon E., wife of Michael Cleaveland, of Lancaster, Charles A. Brommer, Jr., husband of Jaclyn Downs, of Lancaster, and Keith J., husband of Tamela Wester Brommer, of Marietta; a step daughter, Lauren Wilson of Birmingham, AL; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and three siblings, Arthur, husband of Ann Brommer, of Mountville, Douglas Brommer of Columbia, and Elsie Brommer of Columbia.  He is also survived by his former wife, Rachel Wilson, of Birmingham, AL, and Luann Styer Pearson of Marrietta to whom he was married for 15 years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 11:00 am at Kinderhook Evangelical Congregational Church, 560 Kinderhook Road, Columbia, PA.  There is no public viewing.  The family will receive guests at the church on Saturday, January 27 from 10:00 am until the time of the service.  Interment will be in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens.  If desired, contributions may be made in his memory to Alzheimer’s Association, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110-9378.  To express a condolence with the family or to watch a livestream of the service, visit www.spencefuneralservices.com.
